Klingensmith’s Late Penalty Kick Lifts Eagles Past Bucknell in Season Finale

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Avery Klingensmith scored a penalty kick in the final minute to lift American University women's soccer to a 2-1 win over Bucknell in Wednesday's season finale, sending the Eagles' seniors out with a victory to close the 2025 campaign. AU finished in a tie for seventh in the Patriot League standings, barely missing out on a berth in the six-team tournament.

Notable
  • The win for AU was its first over Bucknell since the 2013 season. The Eagles tied the Bison in 2019, but lost in the other 10 meetings since that victory.
  • Klingensmith concluded her senior campaign with a team-high four goals, and tied graduate student Jennifer McGuire for the team lead in points with 10.
  • Junior Bella Miller scored the first goal of the game and her first of the season, less than a minute after coming in off the bench in the 27th minute.
  • Assists on Miller's goal came from freshman Mary DelVecchio, the first point of her career, and from McGuire who tied for the team lead with four assists this season.
  • Sophomore Addison Roemer had a standout performance with nine saves, including a few dramatic stops among her five in the second half. With an even six saves per game this season, Roemer led all players in the Patriot League.
  • Bucknell posted a 26-8 advantage in total shots with a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. The Bison also had 10 opportunities on corner kicks compared to just one for the Eagles.
How it Happened
  • Roemer made four first-half saves including one just 10 seconds into the contest and another in the sixth minute of action.
  • After a third save by Roemer in the 23rd minute, the Eagles had their first chance on goal and they made the most of it.
  • McGuire beat a Bison player in the midfield and sent a long crossing pass to DelVecchio who was wide open on the right side.
  • DelVecchio dribbled five yards down before sending the ball into the box for a sprinting Miller, who had only entered the game less than a minute earlier.
  • Miller's header hit the underside of the crossbar and went down into the net for a 1-0 American lead.
  • Three minutes later, Bucknell evened the score when Louisa Thomsen headed a ball that dribbled past Roemer whose vision was blocked by the action in front of the net.
  • McGuire had her own chance in the 37th minute on a long crossing shot from the left side, but it was saved by Bucknell's Reese Dolan.
  • Roemer's most impressive save came with just over two minutes remaining in the first half, as she got a stop in a 1v1 situation with a charging Henna Andican.
  • Miller had a shot saved on a corner kick from McGuire early in the second half, AU's first corner of the game, but Dolan was able to make the stop.
  • As the Bison fired off 15 second-half shots, including five on goal, the heroics of Roemer were on full display.
  • Roemer's five second-half saves included two diving stops, and she faced six corner kicks by Bucknell just in the second half.
  • The second and final shot on goal in the second half for AU would prove to be the game-winner.
  • Sophomore Maddie Hurowitz was driving toward goal and was fouled in the goal box with just over a minute to play.
  • The final act of Klingensmith's career was to take the penalty kick and send it to the lower left of the box for the 2-1 victory.
