ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite a program-record 21 saves from junior
Caleigh Forti, the American University lacrosse season came to a close as the Eagles fell 18-10 at #20 Navy. American's Patriot League record of 3-6 put it in a four-way tie for fifth place in the standings, but tiebreakers did not fall the Eagles' way for the six-team conference tournament.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Forti had a career and program-record night in goal for AU. The junior goalkeeper made 21 saves, with the previous program high being 20. She also led the team with three ground balls.
- Becca Frank, for the second game in a row, dropped four goals on the opposition. Classmate Maddy Spratt grabbed three goals for a hat trick evening.
- Anabelle Jackson, Hannah Spease, and Alyssa Apuzzo each had one goal. Lizzie de Guzman, Reagan Murdoch, Spease, Jackson, and Frank each had an assist. Apuzzo had two assists.
- On the defensive end, Spease had a team-leading four caused turnovers. She also had a ground ball.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a big-time save on the defensive end from Forti, the Eagles started the scoring when Apuzzo dumped to Spratt perched right in front of the goal.
- Quickly after, Navy went on a scoring spree, dropping four goals unanswered, going up 4-1, and forcing an AU timeout with 10:46 left to play. After the timeout, the Mids kept up the pressure and grabbed another goal.
- The break in the Navy run came from Spratt who got a brace when she came from behind the goal and slipped the ball between the pipes from a tight angle, Eagles down 5-2.
- Navy added more another, but not going away, Spease responded for American. The senior earned a free position shot and sank it. Trading goals back and forth, the Mids tacked on another.
- Forti had eight saves alone in the first half, stopping 50% of the shots that came her way, and keeping the Eagles in it, down 8-4 at the end of the first frame.
- Apuzzo opened the second frame with an Eagles' goal, narrowing the gap to 8-5, but the Mids kept going, grabbing another three goals. American though, by way of Frank and Jackson, scored two more goals.
- Down 11-7 with five to play before the half, the Eagles were 7-for-9 on shots and forced Navy to make a goalie substitution. The Mids scored another goal for cushion ahead of the half, leading 12-7 at the break.
- As it was with the first two periods, the Eagles got the first goal of the third quarter. A goalkeeper error led to Frank picking up a ground ball and Spratt getting the goal, completing the hat trick.
- At this point in the game, midway through the third period, Forti had accumulated 17 saves, just three away from matching the program's single-game record of 20. She finished the frame with 19 saves. The Eagles were down 14-9 with one period left to play.
- Navy started running away with the game though. After scoring two goals to end the third quarter, they opened the final frame with four more unanswered, up 18-9 with 9:41 to play.
- Forti made her 20th and 21st save in quick succession as time wound down in the fourth.
- The scoring ended when Murdoch set up Frank to score her fourth of the night, and the final was 18-10 with the advantage to Navy.
