Wrestling's Maximilian Leete Takes Fifth at EIWA Championships and is NCAA Bound

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Making the first NCAA Wrestling Championships appearance of his career will be American University junior Maximilian Leete, who placed fifth at the EIWA Championships at 133 pounds to earn an automatic qualifying spot. Two others—junior Jack Maida (125) and graduate student Will Jarrell (HWT)—will be awaiting the announcement of NCAA at-large berths on Tuesday, March 12.

Notable
  • Maximilian Leete went 4-2 overall during the two-day meet and placed well above his seed coming in, which was 10th. He won two nail-biters on day two, including earning his fifth-place finish with a 2-2 decision in rideouts against Sacred Heart's Andrew Fallon after there was no winner in sudden victory.
  • Fallon is a former teammate of Leete's who started his career at AU in 2020, but transferred after two seasons. The familiarity, extending back to their high school days, led to a very even match-up with just two escape points scored by both wrestlers.
  • Leete started his day with another long, close bout against Binghamton's Micah Roes, and came out on top in that one as well.
  • With an escape and riding time, Leete prevailed 2-1 to advance to the consolation semifinals.
  • The first chance for an NCAA spot for Leete came against Bucknell's Kurt Phipps, and it was another one that came down to the wire. This time, Leete was on the wrong end and lost 6-4 after a lengthy review near the end of the bout. That loss set up Leete to face his former teammate in the fifth-place bout.
  • Will Jarrell made the most of bonus mat time in his quest for ninth place at heavyweight, with that result being part of the consideration for at-large bids to due the EIWA being allocated eight spots in that weight class. Jarrell held on in a tight bout against Drexel's Santino Morina, winning 2-0 to advance to the ninth-place match against Brown's Alex Semenenko.
  • Jarrell once again did not have a single point scored against him in his bid for ninth, beating Semenenko 4-0 thanks to an escape and a late third-period takedown. His finish didn't land him on the podium, but will help him be in strong consideration for an NCAA at-large bid. Jarrell is 19-15 overall this season and was previously ranked in the top 33.
  • At 125 pounds, 2023 NCAA qualifier Jack Maida did advance to day two, but defaulted to eighth place by medical forfeit and will await a possible at-large bid to NCAAs. Maida is 15-3 for the season and ranked 28th in the country.
