Women's Soccer's Season Concludes with Loss at Loyola Maryland

BALTIMORE, Md. - In a must-win situation for the season to continue, the American University women's soccer team came up against a tough challenge in a road game at Loyola Maryland, and lost 3-1 to the Greyhounds. The Eagles' season concludes with a record of 6-6-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the Patriot League.

Notable
  • American's six wins overall tied for its most since 2019.
  • Junior Avery Klingensmith was the lone goal-scorer for the Eagles. It was her second goal of both the season and her career.
  • Senior Julia Kato and freshman Addison Roemer each made four saves in goal for AU.
  • Loyola finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal, taking five in the first half and seven in the second.
How it Happened
  • The Greyhounds put AU in a one-goal deficit early in the game. After the Eagles struggled to clear the ball out of the box, Loyola's Malia Tarazon came up with it and gave her team a 1-0 lead less than three minutes in.
  • Roemer prevented a second goal for the Greyhounds one minute later, and made three more saves the rest of the half.
  • Klingensmith fired her first shot on goal in the 24th minute, but it was saved by Loyola's Brigid Mulholland.
  • Grad student Izzy Kadzban's shot in the 33rd minute was well-struck from long distance, but it hit the crossbar of the goal.
  • Baylee DeSmit's free kick in the 70th minute found Elizabeth Gallagher who gave the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead.
  • Just one minute later, Klingensmith took advantage of a penalty-kick opportunity to calmly place one in the bottom left of the net and put the Eagles on the scoreboard.
  • The Eagles had another strong chance on a free kick with 15 minutes left, but couldn't place a shot.
  • Loyola's DeSmit scored the insurance goal for the Greyhounds with 11 minutes to go.
  • Kato made two more saves in the remaining time, but the Eagles were not able to get another shot off.
