BERKELEY, Calif. – A Sunday midday game in NorCal saw
Alyssa Apuzzo and
Hannah Spease each score three goals apiece for the American University lacrosse team (4-3) to work past California (2-5), 11-10, to celebrate the Eagles' California trip with a win ahead of conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Junior midfielder Spease finished the afternoon outing with three goals off of five shots, picked up two ground balls, and won seven draw controls, leading the way for the Eagles.
- Apuzzo, a sophomore attacker, came out with three goals as well, on three total shots, and an assist.
- Maddy Spratt and Kellie Linehan each came out of the contest with two goals. Spratt also added five draw controls, a ground ball, and an assist. Linehan's two goals came on two shots.
- Keeper Mary Alice Collins played all 60 minutes of the contest and saved seven of the 17 shots that were put up by the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The scoring started fast, Spease getting on the board within the first minute with an assist from Reagan Murdoch.
- Freshmen Linehan and Jackson got successive goals within a minute 45 seconds of each other, Linehan on a solo effort and Jackson got on the board with a free position shot with 10 minutes left in the opening frame.
- The Bears grabbed quickly eliminated the lead though, scoring three unanswered goals to close the opening frame, the first two were free position shots.
- Three minutes into the second period, Spratt got herself on the board for the first time to put the Eagles ahead. Less than a minute later though, California leveled it up and then took their first lead of the game, up 4-5, over the Eagles with 9:54 left to play in the half.
- It became six unanswered goals from California with seven shots on goal to grab a two goal, 4-6, lead with 7:27 left to play.
- American took a timeout in response to the Bears going on their run and went on to score three before half time. Two goals from sophomore Apuzzo and then another from Spease with an assist from Apuzzo put the Eagles up 7-6 before the California knocked one in with ten seconds left before the half closed out to bring both teams level, 7-7 with the second half left to play.
- Coming out of the break, California struck first,
- Linehan got her brace with 1:16 in the third to bring American back within two, trailing 8-10, with one period left to play, but with some momentum on their side.
- Spratt again, this time on a man-up goal, assisted by Becca Frank, brought the Eagles back within one, trailing 9-10, with 7:39 to play in the game before Apuzzo, again sent one in this time assisted by Emma Hare.
- The game came down to a goal by Spease with 1:41 remaining, taking the 11-10 lead. Sadie Herman would go on to cause a turnover and get the ground ball to hold possession that would ensure the win.
UP NEXT
American will be back at Jacobs Complex to open Patriot League play against Lafayette on March 18 at 1 p.m. After that, the Eagles are back on the road on Saturday, March 25 to take on Holy Cross at 3 p.m.
