Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Georgetown

WASHINGTON – After falling behind in the first quarter, American University lacrosse was unable to mount a comeback as it fell 18-5 to crosstown rival Georgetown to begin the season in a neutral site game at The St. James.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Sophomore Maddy Spratt made the most of her two shots as she led AU with two goals and an assist. She also added a ground ball and a caused turnover for the day.

  • Junior Hannah Spease paced the Eagles with seven draw controls while also recording a shot. Junior Jordan Mitchell also put her mark on the defensive efforts with a pair of draw controls and a caused turnover.

  • A pair of freshmen established their presence in the season kick off as Kellie Linehan made the most of her start with the game's first goal while taking three shots and earning a draw control. Annabelle Jackson added a goal and an assist with three shots and a draw control, as well.

  • Sophomore Becca Frank added an assist on the day while taking a pair of shots.

  • Senior Sadie Herman took a pair of shots, scoring one.

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Lexi Rakis started her first game and made 10 saves while Georgetown put 28 shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Linehan opened the scoring with a goal in the first minute of the game. However, Georgetown scored six unanswered goals before Herman secured the Eagles' second of the quarter with an assist from Jackson.

  • The first quarter was witness to a bevy of shots with AU putting up eight with six on goal, and Georgetown taking 15 shots with 13 on goal.

  • AU began the second quarter with a decisive score from Spratt in the fourth minute with Frank on the assist.

  • The Eagles clamped down their defensive efforts in the second quarter, limiting the Hoyas to two goals despite five shots on goal and forcing three turnovers.

  • Jackson secured a goal of her own with Spratt providing the assist in the first minute of the third quarter. While Georgetown netted four more goals in the frame, Spratt recorded her second goal of the game midway through the quarter.

  • The fourth quarter took on a slower pace as AU was shut out of the quarter despite getting off three shots on goal. The Hoyas managed five shots on goal, scoring three.
