CHARLESTON, S.C. - First-place finishes for juniors Jack Maida and Maximilian Leete highlighted a strong day for American University wrestling at the Battle at The Citadel, where the Eagles came up against competition from the host team as well as Appalachian State, Drexel, George Mason and Indiana. Overall, AU earned five podium finishes at its first tournament of the season.

Notable

• Maida, ranked 30th by Intermat at 125 pounds, had the best record of the day at 4-0, which puts him at 5-0 for the season so far.
• He started the day with a first-period tech fall against The Citadel's Genero De La Garsa in the round of 16, adding three four-point near falls to a takedown in just 2:22.
• Maida then earned wins by decision over Drexel's Gabe Giampietro and Appalachian State's Chad Bellis before pinning App State's Noah Luna in 2:46 for the title.
• Leete started his day in the quarterfinals and went 3-0 at 133 pounds, most notably defeating the 22nd-ranked wrestler Cayden Rooks of Indiana by fall (1:35) in the quarterfinals.
• To win the title, Leete scored a 10-2 major decision over Drexel's Jaxon Maroney.
• Redshirt sophomore Lucas White won his first three bouts including a pin of George Mason's Sean Coughlin on his way to taking second place after a close loss in the final.
• At heavyweight, grad student Will Jarrell and freshman Emmanuel Ulrich both got third place.
• Ulrich went 4-1 and Jarrell went 3-1 on the way to meeting up in the consolation bracket for the third-place match and ending it with a no contest. Jarrell earned two pins along the way, while Ulrich had one, bringing the Eagles' pin total on the day to eight.
• Also earning wins by fall in AU's total were Shamil Kalmatov (125) and Liam Volk-Klos (197).
