Steel’s Goal Leads Women’s Soccer's to First Victory Over Navy Since 2010

WASHINGTON – It was a late second-half goal from junior Brooke Steel, and a clean sheet from junior Julia Kato, that sealed the victory for American University women's soccer over Navy Wednesday at Reeves. The win marked American's first win over Navy since 2010 and now puts the program at its most Patriot League wins since 2013.  
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Steel's goal was her third of the season and the eighth of her career.
  • Sophomore Eliza Fisher recorded an assist on Steel's goal, marking her first assist of the season.
  • Kato's clean sheet was her fifth of the season and the 11th of her career. She has now moved into a tie for third in all-time career shutouts in American's record book, tying Alison Doyle.
  • Sophomore Natalie Dowling made her first collegiate start in Wednesday's game. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Bella Vozar had a chance early in the game to put American in the lead, but her shot was scooped up by Navy's goalkeeper.
  • Navy's first shot of the game came in the 11th minute, but Kato was there to make the save and keep the Midshipmen scoreless.
  • Both team's defenses held strong over the first 45 minutes of action, as the Eagles only took two shots on goal and the Midshipmen only took one.
  • Navy controlled most of the season half early on, keeping the ball on the Eagles' side, but the Eagles' defense held strong and did not allow a shot on goal until the 53rd minute.  
  • In the 83rd minute, it was Steel who found the back of the net for the Eagles to put them in the lead 1-0.   
  • The Eagles' defense held strong for the final seven minutes to secure the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American held the 12-7 shot advantage in the game, as well as the 4-2 shots on goal advantage.
  • Four cards were handed out in the game, two to American and two to Navy.
  • Sophomore Avery Klingensmith led the Eagles with three shots.  
  • Navy had seven corner kick opportunities in the game while American had three.
  • Kato made two saves in goal.
