Women's Soccer Scores First Goal of 2022, Battles to Tie at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University Panthers struck first in the first half, but it was senior Fisayo Iluyomade who netted the equalizer for the American University Eagles giving the Eagles a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in at Vert Stadium.   
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Freshman Eliza Fisher earned her first collegiate start.
  • Sophomore Julia Kato's four saves marked her season-high save total.
  • Both Kato and sophomore Giuliana Capraro played all 90 minutes of action for the second straight game.
  • Sunday's matchup was the first ever meeting between American and High Point.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • High Point had the first four shots of the game, eventually finding the back of the net off a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.  
  • Senior Alysa Vazquez took American's first shot of the game in the 20th minute but missed just left to keep the game 1-0 in favor of the home team.
  • Senior Fisayo Iluyomade found the equalizer in the 38th minute, putting the ball in the top right corner of the net for the Eagles' first goal of the season, sending the game into halftime tied.
  • American had a string of opportunities to take the lead in the 68th minute, drawing three corner kicks in a row but couldn't find the back of the net to keep the game tied.
  • High Point had two good chances to take the lead in the 72nd minute but a save by Kato and the Panthers follow-up shot going high kept the game even at one goal each.
  • The Eagles gave one last push to take home their first win in the final seconds of the game off a shot by senior Natalie Oliver but it was scooped up by the Panthers goalkeeper.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Iluyomade's goal was her fifth career goal and first of the season.
  • After being outshot in the first half 7-6, the Eagles outshot the Panthers in the second half 8-7. Both squads finished the game with 14 shots as well as five shots on goal.  
  • All of American's seven corner kicks came in the second half.
  • Eight different Eagles registered a shot in the game with Iluyomade leading the way with three. Both her and Oliver each totaled two on goal.
 
UP NEXT
  • American will continue its road-swing on Thursday, Aug. 25 as the Eagles travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on head coach Marsha Harper's alma mater the University of South Florida at 4 p.m.
  • The Eagles will play their first home game on Thursday, Aug. 31 when they welcome crosstown rival George Washington to Reeves. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
