Lacrosse Falls to Navy in Patriot League Quarterfinal

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The American University lacrosse team's historic season has come to a close as the Eagles fell to Navy, 23-13, in the team's first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2013.

HEAR FROM COACH TEETERS...
"Today wasn't the result we wanted, but I'm very proud of this team for everything they've accomplished this season. We put AU Lacrosse back on the map and now it's important for us to keep working hard and continue to push this program even further. Thank you to the seniors for everything they've done to help elevate this program."

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Emma Vinall closed her record-breaking career with a team-high six points, including five goals to lead the Eagles.
  • Classmate Kendall Goldblum was next with four points off three goals and an assist in her final game in the red, white, and blue.
  • A pair of freshmen were next with Maddie Spratt and Becca Frank posting two goals each. Spratt also pitched in a team-high three assists for five points.
  • Stefanie Walsh closed her impressive senior season with a goal and an assist.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Alice Collins had yet another solid performance to end her debut season at American. She had 14 saves on the day, including six in the first quarter alone to keep American within two.
  • Junior Jane Reffelt led on the defensive end with three ground balls and two caused turnovers for a pair of career-highs.
  • The Mids were led by Reagan Roelofs' eight points (6g, 2a), followed by five goals from Gil Eby and three from Christine Fiore. A total of 10 players scored for Navy while eight pitched in assists.
  • Jo Torres played all but six minutes in goal for Navy and had six saves on the day.
  • Navy led across the board, including a 24-16 advantage in draw controls, 12-3 in free position shots, and 50-22 in shots overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Navy took control early behind back-to-back goals from Roelofs before Vinall got AU on the board off a dish from Spratt in the fourth minute. Spratt found the back of the net herself a few minutes later, this time off an assist from Walsh, but Navy continued to widen its lead with another pair of goals to stretch the lead to 5-2.
  • With 90 seconds left in the first quarter, Spratt ran in on a breakaway to beat out to Navy defenders and the goalkeeper to close the first quarter trailing by two at 5-3.
  • Roelofs picked up one more for Navy to open the second quarter before Vinall and Goldblum put away back-to-back free position shots to cut back within one at 6-5 with 12 minutes left in the half.
  • It was all Navy over the next four minutes as the Mids went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-5 lead before the Eagles regained their footing behind another pair of goals from Goldblum and Vinall.
  • By the end of half, Navy posted two more and Walsh added her first and only goal of the day to head into the locker room at 12-8.
  • Navy continued to hit short runs throughout the second half, starting with three unanswered goals at the start of the third quarter. Goldblum and Frank added one each, but the Mids took an 18-10 lead into the final 15 minutes.
  • Vinall was back on the board with a pair of goals in the fourth quarter while Frank added her second, but late turnovers and a pair of Navy free position opportunities down the stretch kept the Mids out of reach.
