Lacrosse Falls to Sixth-Ranked Loyola Maryland

WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team put six players on the board but couldn't quite keep pace with the sixth-ranked team in Division I on Wednesday and fell to Loyola Maryland, 18-8, at home in Jacobs Complex.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • A pair of freshmen paced the Eagles with Alyssa Apuzzo and Maddy Spratt scoring two goals each.
  • This is the second that Apuzzo and Spratt have each led the Eagles so far this season.
  • Fifth-years Emma Vinall and Kendall Golblum, senior Stefanie Walsh, and junior Emma Hare each added a goal to close out the scoring for the day. Goldblum also pitched in one of AU's three assists along with junior Sadie Herman and freshman Becca Frank.
  •  Sophomore Emma Fiore tied her career-high with three ground balls. Both Fiore and senior Katie Pierce tied their respective career-highs with two caused turnovers each.
  • Vinall and Goldblum continued to lead the Eagles in the draw circle with three draw controls each.
  • The Greyhounds were led by a five-goal effort from Livy Rosenzweig. She was one of eight players to get on the board for Loyola alon with Georgia Latch, who scored the day's only other hat trick with three goals.
  • Rosenzweig also added an assist for a game-high six points while Sydni Black led the field with three.
  • Loyola led with 27 shots to 19 from AU, and held an 18-12 advantage in the draw circle. American held the edge in ground balls, 14-8, and caused turnovers, 7-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Loyola jumped out to an early lead with an opening 6-0 run through the first five minutes of the game. Apuzzo and Spratt broke up the run with their first goals of the day, but Loyola posted three more unanswered goals to take a 10-2 lead with just under five minutes left in the first quarter.
  • Walsh found the back of the net on a free position opportunity with 2:50 left on the clock, but Loyola had the final say with a late goal from Sam Fiedler to send the team's into the break at 11-3.
  • The Greyhounds continued the run in the second quarter with a pair of early goals to stretch the lead to 10, but American was able to capitalize on another free position opportunity, this time with Hare firing in the shot.
  • The Eagles had a couple more looks in the final minutes of the second quarter but couldn't quite sneak past the Loyola goalkeeper and closed the first half trailing Loyola, 13-4.
  • Goldblum opened the second half with a quick shot in transition after an early Loyola turnover, but it was all the Greyhounds over the next 10 minutes as they stretched their lead to 16-5. Apuzzo once again stopped the run with her second goal of the day, firing in her shot after picking off a pass in the midfield.
  • The two teams were even in the fourth quarter as Loyola posted two goals to open the stanza before the Eagles hit a pair of their own with Vinall getting on the board off a pass from Becca Frank, then Spratt posting another free position goal in the final four minutes.
