ST. LOUIS, Mo. - It was a tough end to a short season for American University wrestlers
Gage Curry and
Tim Fitzpatrick, who both bowed out of the NCAA Championships after a pair of losses on day one at the Enterprise Center.
CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP
- Curry had a promising start in his opening match against NC State's Jakob Camacho, jumping out to a 4-0 lead.Â
- The match was knotted at 5-5 at the end of the first period, but Camacho took charge in the second with two takedowns and four nearfall points.
- Curry scored with a few escapes in the third period, but lost 21-9.
- The final match for Curry proceeded in similar fashion with a tight first period but a big surge ahead for his opponent, Danny Vega, in the second.Â
- The end result was a 21-4 tech fall loss for Curry.
- Fitzpatrick also put up the first points in his opening match with a takedown of Michigan's Logan Massa, but the second period was a different story and Massa got the win by fall with just seconds left in the second frame.
- In the late-night consolation match against Edinboro's Jacob Oliver, Fitzpatrick kept things close the whole way.Â
- He took a 2-1 lead into the second period, trailed 4-2 heading to the third, and had it within a point at 6-5 with three seconds remaining.Â
- Ultimately there was no last-second takedown to be had, and an Oliver escape made the final score 7-5.
