WASHINGTON - With three outstanding performances for American University wrestling, freshman
Jack Maida has been named the
GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 29-Dec. 5.
Maida's win was the highlight of the match for the Eagles in their Dec. 3 dual vs. No. 12 Rutgers, as he earned a 6-2 decision over Devon Britton. His takedown midway through the second put him in the lead, 3-2, and he got another takedown in the third period along with a riding time point. Maida then made it a weekend sweep by earning two bonus-point wins on Sunday. He shut out Duke's Drake Doolittle for a 9-0 major decision and later pinned Hofstra's Ty Cymmerman in 1:54. For the season, Maida now stands at 5-5 overall and 3-1 in dual matches.
American's final competition of the calendar year will be the Reno Tournament of Champions in Nevada on Sunday, Dec. 19. The Eagles' next home match is a big one against #8 Ohio State on Monday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
