New Program Records Guide Lacrosse to Undefeated Non-Conference Slate

WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team (7-0) earned its first undefeated non-conference record in program history with a 19-9 win over Presbyterian (2-5) on Tuesday behind program record performances from senior Casey Harkins and junior Emma Vinall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Casey Harkins had one of the most historic performances in program history, toppling three records - two single-game and one single-season - all previously held by teammate Erica Skowron. She led the team with 11 assists and 12 points, and closed the day with 34 assists on the season.
  • Skowron had previously set the single-game records with six assists and 11 points against Howard on February 28, 2018. She also held the single-season assists record with 25 from that same season.
  • Junior Emma Vinall also added her name to AU's history books, reseting the single-game record in goals scored with nine to lead the team. The previous record of eight had been held by Eleni Vagelatos since April 10, 1996.
  • A total of seven Eagles contributed to the final tally, including a hat trick from junior Kendall Goldblum, two goals from freshman Emma Hare and sophomore Hali Sibilia, and one goal from Skowron and freshman Sydney Wender.
  • Goldblum also added the 12th and final assist for the day.
  • Harkins also led the team with three ground balls alongside senior goalkeeper Emma Curtis.
  • Curtis came away with eight saves in her full 60 minutes of play.
  • Vinall also brought down a game-high 13 draw controls while Goldblum earned five.
  • Presbyterian was led by a hat trick from Ana Boothe. Abby Edmisten and Kara DiClemente followed with two goals each.
  • Kayla Koch led the Blue Hose in goal with a dozen saves.
  • American led in almost every category, putting up 33 shots to Presbyterian's 19 and bringing down 20 draw controls while the Blue Hose only earned nine. The only category Presbyterian led in was ground balls, 18-15.
  • With the exception of a brief 1-1 tie early in the game, the Eagles dominated throughout the game.
  • AU led 13-4 at the half behind six goals from Vinall and three from Goldblum.
  • The Eagles continued building on that lead in the second half, adding four unanswered goals to pick up an 18-6 lead before Presbyterian scored three of the final four to close the game.
QUOTABLE
"We had two good wins this week. Both Wofford and Presbyterian gave us really great games, and we played the full 60 in both and came away with some new records. We are really proud of the whole team and the way we ended non-conference play. But the biggest thing is now taking on the Patriot League as if it is a brand new season, and bringing with us all the lessons we learned over the last seven games." - Lindsey Ronbeck, assistant coach

"Closing out non-conference play with a strong win is the mentality we want the team to carry into league play. Our Patriot League opponents are some of the best in the country, so we are going to have some big tests in the upcoming weeks. It is great for Casey Harkins and Emma Vinall to be recognized individually for their contributions. As a senior, Casey has been a strong leader who gets the ball in the hands of the scorer at the right time. Emma is so consistent and has worked hard to fight off defenders, and that will only get harder in the league games." - Maureen Breslin, interim head coach
