WEST POINT, N.Y. - The dual meet season did not start the way American University wrestling had planned, as the Eagles dropped three of three matches at the West Point Duals on Saturday. AU came up short 22-13 to Wyoming, 33-7 to Army and 39-4 to North Carolina.
MEET RESULTS
- Despite the team finishes, three AU wrestlers finished the day with winning records. Senior Gage Curry (125), redshirt junior Kizhan Clarke (149) and redshirt senior Sal Profaci (141) all went 2-1 overall.
- Profaci's two wins were both major decisions. He took down Chase Zollman of Wyoming 12-0, and beat Army's Taylor Brown by a score of 12-4.
- Clarke shut out Army's P.J. Ogunsanya, 6-0 and beat Wyoming's Jaron Jensen, 4-1.
- The 149-pound UNC wrestler, Austin O'Connor, is the top-ranked in the nation at that weight class. Clarke pushed O'Connor to overtime but came up short, 5-3.
- Curry scored the Eagles' lone win vs. UNC, beating Timothy Decatur by major decision, 9-1.
HEAD COACH TEAGUE MOORE
- "Gage, Sal, and Kizhan going 2-1 was good for us, but other than that it was a tough day. Kizhan pushed a top-ranked opponent to OT and gave a great effort in his only loss. That was after two hard-fought wins against nationally competitive opponents. Sal and Gage also gave a great effort and fell short to opponents that have been in and out of national rankings."
- "The biggest takeaway from today is that we need a lot of work. There are big areas of concentration that we're missing. It's unfortunate, but today was not our best effort. We can and will do better."
UP NEXT
- The first home dual meets for AU are on Friday, Jan. 10 vs. Brown and Saturday, Jan. 11 vs. Drexel, both at 7 p.m.
