Box Score WASHINGTON — Kira Flaherty scored just 8:05 into the match and Amy Krotine finished off the shutout in goal as American University beat Longwood, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match Thursday at Reeves Field.
The victory was the Eagles' first in seven decisions this season, while the Lancers fell to 1-5.
Flaherty put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the ninth minute on a blast from 25 yards away off a short pass by sophomore
Audrey Denkler. Flaherty was in the middle of the field and booted a shot just inside the right post.
Each team took four shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Longwood pressed the offense in the second half, outshooting AU 8-1 after halftime. But Krotine had four of her eight saves after halftime to complete the shutout.
The Lancers finished with a 12-5 edge in shots, while AU held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Longwood goalkeeper Maria Kirby made three saves.
American will host VCU on Sunday at noon.
