Box Score HAMILTON, N.Y. — Marley Jennings scored in the 53rd minute, but Colgate led by two at the half and defeated the American Univeristy women's soccer team, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon to open Patriot League play.
Colgate's Sarah Coy finished with three goals to lead the Raiders to their first PL win of the season.
American falls to 3-6 on the season and 0-1 in the PL.
Coy's first goal gave her team a one-goal lead in the 32nd minute off a pass from Catherine Williams. The play was started by Williams, who flicked the ball over to Coy for a shot that reached the upper left corner.
Late in the first half, Shannon Pawlak played a through ball over to Coy, who one-touched it past AU keeper Courtney Bembenek for a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles cut the deficit in the second frame on Jenning's tally. The goal was set up on a broken play, as the ball was bouncing around the box before it found the foot of the AU attacker, whose shot went low to the right side.
Colgate added an insurance marker in the 88th minute to complete Coy's hat trick after she beat an AU defender to a loose through ball and then cut inside to beat Bembenek to the left.
Colgate finished with a 20-6 edge in shots. Erin Cummings made three saves for Colgate, while Bembenek made one save in the defeat.
AU returns to Reeves Field next Saturday to host Boston Univeristy at 1 p.m.
