Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – American University played a strong first half and had a scoring chance early in the second, but Longwood scored a pair of goals in a five-minute stretch midway through the second half to earn a 2-0 women's soccer victory over the Eagles on Friday night.
The match was the season-opener for each team.
Amanda Spencer and Meghan Magee scored at the 73:01 and 78:11 mark respectively to account for the Lancers' goals. Each tally was unassisted.
Spencer sent in a strike from the top of the penalty box and a deflection put the ball in the lower right corner of the net.
Five minutes later, Magee converted a rebound, booting the ball inside the left post for the score.
The Eagles were outshot 5-4 in the first half, but a defense that had held two exhibition opponents scoreless survived six Longwood corner kicks before halftime. AU's offense forced Lancer keeper Hailey Machen to make four saves before intermission.
American had a chance eight minutes into the second half when a shot from
Kira Flaherty hit the crossbar. The Eagles had the next two shots, but one was blocked and Machen made the last of her five saves on the other to keep the match scoreless.
Longwood had 14 shots in the second half to end the match with a 19-10 edge in shots. The Lancers had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
AU was led offensively by three shots each from Flaherty and
Audrey Denkler.
American returns to Reeves Field for its home opener on Sunday when it faces George Mason at 1 p.m.
