Box Score WASHINGTON — Kelly Donovan scored the game-winning goal with 1:40 remaining in double-overtime to give the American University women's soccer team its first Patriot League win of the season, 2-1, over Lafayette on Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field.
American is now 4-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the PL. Lafayette falls to 5-4-1 and 0-3-1 in the league.
Donovan took a pass from Marley Jennings from midfield and left the ball to the left side sending a chip over Lafayette keeper Danielle Sedillo's head. Sedillo made three saves on the day.
Despite being outshot 15-8, AU played a tight game defensively behind keeper Courtney Bembenek, who played in place of Charlene Belanger, who sat out due to a red card issued at Loyola.
Bembenek made seven saves and kept the Eagles alive after a late second half push by the Leopards.
The game was held scoreless through 57 minutes of action until Jennings played a loose ball in the box to JoJo Miller for her second of the season.
Leading late in the contest, AU got caught deep in its zone and a cross sent over by Lafayette's Kaelin King found Annika Sheehan for the game-tying goal in the 87th minute.
The Leopards finished with nine shots in the second half and held a 10-7 edge in corner kicks.
American will have the week off until the head to Army West Point next Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
