WASHINGTON – Paris Wood, who snapped a 17-year-old pool record and bested three meet records on her way to six event victories, was selected Monday as the GEICO AU Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 11.
Wood, a senior from Walnut Creek, Calif., dominated the women's side of a two-day, two-city, three-session dual meet with Loyola Maryland this weekend.
Her AU pool record came Saturday in the 100-yard backstroke, as she went 57.71. The old mark of 57.96 was set by AU's Maite Trueba in 1998.
Wood dominated the backstroke events in the two-day meet, which began Friday in Baltimore. Her winning marks of 27.54 in the 50 back and 2:05.11 in the 200 back also were meet records.
Wood also won the 100 freestyle (53.53), 200 free (1:56.38) and set a career-best by winning the 500 free in 5:08.25. Her mark is 14th all-time at American in that event.
The Eagles are off until Oct. 30 when they travel to Howard for a triangular meet with Mary Washington.
