Box Score American University women's soccer took on the Richmond Spiders in a mid-week tilt at Reeves Field, but fell in the non-conference matchup, 3-1. Junior forward Lindsay Muri tallied a late score for the Eagles, but the final offensive push came too late for AU.
Richmond (3-5-2) was active with the ball all game long, controlling for much of the match, and totaling 15 shots in the contest, to American's (3-7-0) 11. While the total shot totals were close, the difference was strikes on goal, which the Spiders led, 10-2.
The first score of the match came in the 15th minute, with Richmond finding an opening in the AU defense. Both teams continued to play back-and-forth soccer for much of the initial half, but with only 1:38 remaining in the initial stanza, the Spiders found another goal, to take a 2-0 advantage into the half.
Junior keeper Sarah Dejak made six saves in the match, but faced constant pressure in her third start of the season. Richmond made it a three-score lead 10 minutes into the second half, prompting AU to make many changes to its lineup.
The fresh legs swung momentum for Eagles as junior goalkeeper Charlene Belanger came in to post 35 scoreless minutes while making a save.
American got on the board in the 82nd minute when Muri buried a header from senior Erin Ryan. It was Muri's team-leading third goal of the season and Ryan's first point of the year. Eight different Eagles have now tallied an assist through 10 games this season.
AU could get now closer however as time closed out on the American's late comeback attempt.
The Eagles hit the road this weekend, traveling north to face Patriot League foe Holy Cross, Saturday, September 28, at 1 p.m.
