Kevin Tao posted the American
University wrestling team's biggest upset this season at Session 1
of the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on
Thursday, upsetting third-seeded Donald Vinson of Binghamton in
overtime to remain in the championship bracket.
Tao and Vinson met before this season, with Vinson pinning the
senior in a dual meet. Tao tied it up in the third period with an
escape to send it to overtime. After a scoreless sudden victory
period the two went to tiebreakers, where a reversal from Tao gave
him the 3-1 advantage and the upset.
American's two other wrestlers, David Terao and Blake Herrin will wrestle in the
wrestlebacks tonight after dropping their opening matches. Terao
was pinned in the third period by seventh-seeded Nathan Kraisser of
North Carolina and Herrin was edged in a 6-1 decision.
Penn State leads the team standings with 14.5 points after the
first session. Session 2 gets underway tonight at 6:30 p.m. CST
(7:30 p.m. EST).
David Terao – 125
Terao held a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period with the
riding time advantage, but seventh-seeded Nathan Kraisser of North
Carolina was able to get the third period fall in 6:27. Terao will
take on 10th-seeded Josh Martinez of Air Force in the wrestlebacks
to stay alive in the tournament.
Kevin Tao - 149
Third-seeded Donald Vinson of Binghamton took the 1-0 advantage
on an escape in the second period for the first lead in the match.
Tao tied it up in the third with an escape and neither was able to
get the shot as the match went to overtime. In the first tiebreaker
period, Tao came up with the reversal after Vinson started on top
and held on for the 3-1 upset. He will face Navy's Raymond
Borja in a rematch of their EIWA consolation semifinal
match.
Blake Herrin – HWT
Herrin dropped a 6-1 decision to Iowa State's Matthew
Gibson in the first round. Gibson scored the first takedown of the
bout and was able to maintain his momentum for the victory. Herrin
takes on Cornell's Stryker Lane tonight in the
wrestlebacks.
