NCAA Championship Notes
The American University wrestling team is sending three
student-athletes to the 2013 NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa
from March 21-23. American's line-up features returning NCAA
qualifier Kevin
Tao. EIWA runner-up Blake
Herrin and third-place finisher David
Terao will be making their first career appearance at
the championships.
The Eagles crowned two All-Americans at last year's NCAA
Championships and finished in 19th place, marking the seventh
straight year American placed in the top-30.
Tao completed the year with a record of 24-13, posting a
team-best five major decisions and adding seven falls. He placed
fifth at the EIWA Championships, going 3-2 over the weekend, and
received an at-large bid into the field.
Herrin owns American's best record this season, finishing with a
mark of 26-8 while adding three major decisions. He registered his
first fall of the year in his opening round of the EIWA
Championships, pinning Franklin & Marshall's Alexander Henry in
4:46. Herrin went on to the championship round, where he fell to
Navy's Daniel Miller, 2-1, in the first tiebreaker period.
Terao accumulated the most wins of American's wrestlers this
season, tallying a record of 28-12. He made the podium in every
tournament, opening the year with his second place finish at the
Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational and closing it out with his third
place result at the EIWA Championships. Terao fell to sixth-ranked
Nahshon Garrett of Cornell in a 3-1 decision in the semifinals, and
bounced back with his fastest fall of the year, pinning Army's
Hunter Wood in 45 seconds. The redshirt freshman leads the team
with 10 falls, while adding two major decisions and one technical
fall.
