The American University women's soccer team took on Army in West Point, N.Y., Tuesday night in the Patriot League Quarterfinals and after a 110 scoreless minutes and 13 saves by junior goalkeeper Charlene Belanger, the Eagles advanced on, downing the Black Knights, 3-1, on penalty kicks.

The American defense faced 22 shots, but Belanger and the defense kept Army off the scoreboard with its physical play, before AU triumphed by tallying three scores on it's penalty kicks to West Point's one.

"It was an even match from both teams with some close calls on both sides," said head coach Anabel Jimenez Hering. "Charlie Belanger and our back line had a stellar game, keeping us in it. Overall, in the second half and overtime we brought more urgency and physicality which gave us the edge."

Army outshot American 6-2 in the first half and 10-3 in regulation, but All-Patriot League defender Kirsten Eriksen and the back four of AU kept the Eagles in the match and forced overtime.

Belanger stepped up in the extra periods, making one save in first and two more in the second OT.

AU used its depth to stay fresh in the contest, using eight players off the bench.

In penalty kick's All-Patriot League forward Lindsay Muri got the scoring started, burying her attempt and putting AU in the advantage. Rookie Ashley Bonner followed suit to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Army was able to make its next attempt, but sophomore Kassie Bryant came through with the clinching P.K., to push the Eagles on to the Patriot League Semifinals.

American will continue on to Annapolis, Md., this Friday, November 8, taking on host Navy, in the next round of the Patriot League playoffs.
