Box Score The American University women's soccer team closed out the 2013 regular season on the road Saturday night, traveling north to Colgate, but was edged by the Red Raiders, 2-1. Having already clinched a spot in the Patriot League tournament the Eagles are the No. 5 seed in the playoffs and will face No. 4 Army at West Point on Tuesday, November 5, at 7 p.m., in the conference quarterfinals.
The Eagles scored the first goal in Hamilton, N.Y., as one found its way in at the end of the first half which gave American a 1-0 lead heading into the break. Sophomore Kelly Donovan was the last AU player to get a piece of the ball before a Red Raider defender played it in.
The lead would not hold long after halftime however as Colgate found the game-tying score in the 55th minute, sliding one past the defense.
The Colgate own-goal was not the only of the match though as a ball played in the AU zone last touched an Eagle defender, deflecting in to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead with only 15 minutes left in regulation.
It was an evenly played match with Colgate holding a slight edge in shots, 17-13, but the Red Raiders benefited from eight corner kicks to AU's three.
Junior goalkeeper Charlene Belanger made five saves in the match to bring her regular season total to 95.
For the second-straight year, the Eagles are headed back to the Patriot League Tournament, taking on the United States Military Academy in the first round this coming Tuesday.
