Box Score The American University women's soccer team put its unblemished Patriot League record on the line Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field and scored three times against Bucknell for a decisive, 3-0, victory to remain atop the conference stanings.
Junior Lindsay Muri scored in the 18th minute to put the Eagles up early in the first half. AU added two second half goals from senior Shaena Alfonsi and rookie Ashley Bonner.
Freshmen midfielder Sara Perlman assisted on all three of the goals, while junior goalkeeper Charlene Belanger made seven saves for her third shutout of the season.
"It was great for us to keep our string of Patriot League wins going today. We got great performances from players across the board, both starters and reserves," said head coach Anabel Jimenez Hering. "We executed well on the chances we had while our defense really stepped up."
Although the Bison outshot AU, 14-11, the Eagles equaled Bucknell, putting seven of those attempts on net.
Muri's eventual game-winning goal came in the box off a beautiful cross near the endline from sophomore Kelly Donovan after Perlman fed it in from the top.
Perlman was active throughout the second half, registering her second assist in the 58th minute with a corner kick that Alfonsi was able to get past the Bucknell keeper.
11 minutes later, the Eagles made it a three-goal advantage as two excellent touch passes by Perlman and Muri led to an open Bonner for her first career goal.
The Eagles will once again be tested in Patriot League play as AU hosts fellow league-unbeaten, Navy, on Tuesday, October 8 at 3:30 p.m.
