Box Score Kelly Donovan and Jasmine Mohandesi each scored for the American University women's soccer team en route to a 2-1 victory at UMBC Saturday afternoon.
American (1-2-1) struck first in the 30th minute as the freshman Donovan registered her first-career goal. The play was setup on a pass from Erin Mulhern as she found a streaking Donovan. Her shot from just inside the goalbox curved into the far right corner of the goal.
The Eagles took that 1-0 advantage into halftime before UMBC (0-2-1) tied the match with a 52nd minute score. Alexa Quaranta was credited with the goal as she beat AU goalkeeper Charlene Belanger inside the right post.
After more than 25 minute of 1-1 action, AU's Mohandesi tallied her third goal in as many matches, which turned out to be the game-winner. Danielle Beard initiated the attack, chasing down the ball and tapping the pass ahead to Mohandesi, who fired in the shot from 10 yards out.
"We played well in the first half, but lost our rhythm a bit early in the second half," Head Coach Dave Bucciero remarked. "After UMBC tied the match, we regained our composure and I'm very pleased that we found a way to win."
American outshot the Retrievers by a 17-8 margin, which included an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. Each side registered three corner kicks.
After beginning the 2012 season with four straight road matches, the Eagles will host Liberty in the home opener this Friday, August 31 at 4 p.m. in a match that will be carried live on Eagles Vision TV. This marks the first of five consecutive non-conference home matches for American.
