Women's Soccer Edged by Colgate in Patriot League Semifinals

Box Score

The American University women's soccer team fell to Colgate, 3-0, in the Patriot League Semifinals on Friday afternoon in Annapolis, Md. The Eagles finish the year with an overall record of 6-10-3 after earning its first tournament berth since 2009.

"We struggled in a lot of areas today and Colgate is a very good team," said Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "It's a tough loss, but we made a lot of strides as a program this year and hope to build on this next year. Our captains did a great job leading the team in a positive manner and I really appreciate all their hard work as well as the other seniors."

Colgate (10-5-4) recorded back-to-back opportunities to open the match when Jenna Raepple's attempt hit the post and a header from Catherine Williams went wide. The Raiders registered three straight opportunities before they were finally able to convert on the fourth try with Williams knocking in the rebound for the 1-0 lead after Charlene Belanger stopped Raepple's attempt.

Michelle Montilio notched consecutive shots to close out the half, but Ashley Walsh made the save on the first and the Colgate defense blocked the second to preserve its 1-0 advantage heading into the intermission.

Erin Mulhern tried to add the equalizer 50 seconds after the break, but her attempt was saved and Jasmine Mohandesi's try on the subsequent corner went just wide of the net. The Raiders took a 2-0 lead on a Caroline Brawner tally and added another five and a half minutes later when Jillian Kinter found the back of the net from six yards out in the 70th minutes.

Colgate held a 17-7 advantage in shots with a 9-3 margin in shots on goal. The Raiders also held a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks. Belanger registered six saves for the Eagles.

Following the tournament, Michaela Cowgill and Kirsten Eriksen were named to the All-Tournament Team.
