Mohandesi's Strike Leads Women's Soccer to Third Straight Win

Box Score

Jasmine Mohandesi's goal in the 25th minute proved to be the difference as the American University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.

"We played great in the first half and struggled in the second half as we started to be fatigued and Bucknell picked up their intensity," said Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "This is a good Bucknell side and to win up here is a great result for our team."

American (5-8-2, 3-1-0) had a corner kick in the seventh minute with Danielle Beard's shot going just over the crossbar. The Bison had three consecutive corner kicks but were unable to get off a shot.

Bucknell (9-7-0, 2-2-0) had a chance in the 24th minute, with Charlene Belanger able to come up with the save on Courtney Nelson's attempt. Michaela Cowgill cleared the ball into Bison territory, where Michelle Montilio picked it up and fed it to Mohandesi who added the finish from 12 yards out for the 1-0 lead.

American nearly added another immediately after the score. Carleigh Morba drove down the field and challenged the Bison goalkeeper, who was able to make the save to keep the 1-0 Eagles' lead heading into the break.

Bucknell almost tallied the equalizer in the 57th minute on a corner kick but Taryn Boucher's shot was blocked by the American defense. The two teams continued to go back and forth through the rest of the second half.

The Bison had another opportunity to knot the game in the 85th minute after they were awarded a penalty kick. Kayla Yee took the shot but it sailed over the crossbar to maintain the American win.

"I thought Charlene Belanger was once again great in goal and both Stephanie Glover and Hannah Tatro were fantastic," said Bucciero. "Jasmine did a great job of turning and finishing a great shot to give us the goal we needed in the first half. I know our team is confident we can win each and every game but we also know Holy Cross and Army will present difficult challenges and we will have to play well."

Bucknell held a 14-12 edge in shots in the match, with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Belanger registered seven saves to post her third straight shutout.

This is the first time American has posted three straight conference victories since the 2009 season. The last time American recorded three straight shutouts was during the 2001 season when it defeated Navy, 1-0, Bucknell, 2-0, and Virginia Commonwealth, 1-0.

American will look to extend its win streak on Friday, October 19 when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
