Box Score Visiting Richmond tallied one goal in each half en route to a 2-0 triumph over the American University women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field.
Richmond (6-3-2) took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the match when Becca Wann registered her ninth strike of the season on a free kick from just outside the goalbox. Wann fired a line-drive shot at the far post and AU goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou had little chance to react to the well-placed strike.
The Spiders added an insurance goal 27 seconds into the second half when Natalie LeClair crossed a pass to Liza Koch, who slid a rising shot into the top of the net from the right side.
American (3-7-1) was able to produce few legitimate scoring opportunities on the strong Richmond defensive unit. The Spiders held a 14-8 advantage in shots along with a 7-3 margin in shots on goal. Samantha Trotta led the Eagles with two shots.
"I think we did some things well today, but we were unable to generate many chance offensively," said Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "Richmond did a good job slowing down our attack whenever we looked like we might have an opportunity. I think these non-conference games are teaching us a lot about our team and hopefully we can continue to stay focused and keep improving as we get into the Patriot League schedule."
AU will close out its non-conference schedule this Monday, September 26 when it hosts George Washington at 4 p.m. The Eagles will then begin Patriot League play next Saturday, October 1 against Navy at 1 p.m. at Reeves Field. Both upcoming matches will be available on Eagles Vision TV.
