Freshman Nicole Paviglionite tallied her first-career goal to give the American University women's soccer team a lead, but the Eagles were unable to hold it in Friday afternoon's 1-1 double overtime draw against Mount St. Mary's.
Paviglionite's strike came in the 62nd minute to give American (2-5-1) a 1-0 advantage. Jasmine Mohandesi picked up her team-leading third assist on the play as she crossed the pass to Paviglionite, who headed her shot past Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Alicia Miller.
American's lead, however, was short-lived as Mount St. Mary's (1-3-1) struck back with the equalizer six minutes later. On the play, a Mount St. Mary's cross was misplayed by AU goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou and Alicia Mirando was there to put away the easy score from close.
AU had its best game-winning opportunity in the final two minutes of regulation when Katarina Kingston's blast from 30 yards out hit the crossbar. Neither side generated many scoring chances in overtime with the exception of Mount St. Mary's Ragan Cote, who had her scoring opportunity denied by Efstathiou with a minute-and-a-half remaining in the second overtime session.
The Eagles held a distinctive advantage in the match with their 26 shots compared to only 11 for The Mount. Mohandesi led American with six shots while Michaela Cowgill and Paviglionite each recorded four.
American will hit the road for its next contest, which will take place this Sunday, September 18 at Delaware State. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
