Women's Soccer Falls at Lafayette in Overtime

Box Score

The American University women's soccer team visited Lafayette Sunday afternoon in Easton, Pa., and came up on the short end of a 2-1 overtime decision.

The difference in the match was a 92nd minute goal by Janelle Pierson, which gave Lafayette (8-3-1, 3-0-0 PL) the game-ending victory in the first overtime session. The game-winning play for the Leopards was setup on a pass from Alex Reisinger as Pierson headed her shot past AU goalkeeper Klare Lazor.

American (4-10-1, 0-3-0 PL) took a 1-0 lead in the match in the 56th minute when Carleigh Morba cleaned up a Michaela Cowgill shot off the crossbar. The score was Morba's third of the season.

The Eagles' advantage, however, was short-lived as Lafayette tied the match at one in the 65th minute. Alyssa Finelli scored the goal for the Leopards, which came off a cross from Julia Bell. Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the remaining 25 minutes following Lafayette's tying goal, which forced sudden-victory overtime.

American held a 13-7 advantage in shots over the 91-plus minutes of the match, which included a 9-4 margin in shots on goal. AU controlled play much of the second half, outshooting the Leopards, 8-3, in the period.

"Clearly the ball is not bouncing our way right now," Head Coach Dave Bucciero said following the match. "I thought we played well and created enough chances to win today. I am proud of our team and the way we played. We just have to finish our chances better and keep our concentration for the entire match. Specifically, Jenna Stasiewicz was fantastic and she was the best player out there for us today."

The Eagles will return home for their next three matches, all of which will be against Patriot League foes. AU will host Bucknell next Sunday, October 16 at 12 p.m. before taking on Holy Cross and Army on Friday, October 21 and Sunday, October 23, respectively. All three upcoming matches will be available on Eagles Vision TV.
