BALTIMORE, Md. - The American University
women's soccer team dropped its fifth straight match on Sunday,
falling to Loyola (Md.), 1-0, at Diane Geppl-Aikens Field. The
Eagles will enter the Patriot League portion of their schedule with
a 3-7-1 overall record. The Greyhounds are now 2-5-2.
Loyola set the tone early taking its first shot four minutes and
38 seconds into the match that was sent high. The Greyhounds tested
Eagles keeper Kelsey Wiggins for
the first time 18 minutes in, but Wiggins was up to the task and
made two more saves over the next nine minutes. The AU defense held
their ground until late in the first half, when a corner kick
opportunity at 40:08 for Loyola turned out to be the deciding
factor. Theresa Ferraina bent her kick out of Wiggins reach and
into the goal for the 1-0 lead and the eventual game-winner.
The Eagles, who were held to no shots in the first half, took
two, both on goal, in the second half but were unable to beat
Greyhounds goalie Brittany Henderson. Krystn Hodge had an
opportunity at the 62:34 mark and Kelsey Brasher
struck at 75:09.
Wiggins made six saves on the day in goal, while Henderson had
two.
AU will have the week off before hosting Colgate at 1 p.m. on
Saturday, Oct. 4 at Reeves Field to open the conference slate.
