Sophomore Carlos Jamieson took third in the men's race and junior Kate Lilley finished ninth in the women's to lead the American University men's and women's cross country teams to respective second-place finishes at the Delaware Invitational Saturday.
Running with a limited men's squad, Jamieson took his top honors for the Eagles for the second meet in a row, running 26:30 for third place over the 8K course. Senior Rob Hoffman finished close behind in sixth at 26:44 and fellow senior Dustin Emrani took 12th in 27:06. Freshman Peter Woerner was the fourth Eagle to come through the chute in 27th at 27:50 with senior Alex Caudana right behind at 30th in 27:54. The men's team combined for 78 points, which was good for second-place, 14 points behind race winner Delaware.
The women's team had a familiar site led by the one-two-three punch of Lilley, Meghan Mason and Cathleen Ford. Lilley churned out 6:07 average miles for ninth in 19:02. Mason raced to 12th-place in 19:19 with Ford on her heels in 14th in 19:27. Only seconds later, freshman Greta Wicklund had a breakout race as she took 16th in 19:30. Fellow freshman Danielle Loughrey rounded out AU's scorers with a time of 19:53, good for 20th overall. Those five combined for 71 points, just nine behind race victory Delaware in second.
The Eagles now have two weeks to put the finishing touches on their preparation before the Patriot League Championships Saturday Oct. 28 at Colgate University.
