Sept. 27, 2003
WASHINGTON - American University gave up the
first goal of the game, but came roaring back to score the final
four, as they went on to defeat Holy Cross 4-1. It was both AU's
first Patriot League contest of the year, as well as the first time
they had ever defeated Holy Cross. The Crusaders Sarah Comeaux
started the scoring when she beat Lauren Wohl (Bel Air, Md./Bel
Air/Bucknell) for a goal at 29:31. Wohl toughened up the rest of
the way, and finished the day with two saves on six shots. The
Eagles trailed 1-0 when Jana Lee (New Providence, N.J./Summit)
entered at 42:03, and just 18 seconds later she found the back of
the net, after beating a defender and the Holy Cross goalie. Lee
started the second half and scored what would prove to be the
gamewinner at 55:35. The play began on a pass from Amy Muller
(Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) to Anabel Jimenez (Kensington,
Md./Bullis). Jimenez then spotted Lee, who collected the pass and
scored the second Eagle goal of the game. Jimenez helped American
ice the game when she assisted on AU's third goal of the game.
Kristie Fontana (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) was the
beneficiary and scored at 75:20, giving AU a two goal lead and the
second goal of her season. Freshman Gabby D'Adamo (Naples,
Fla./Barron Collier) entered the game at 85:45 and less than a
minute later she notched her first varsity goal. Fittingly enough,
the assist was by Lee, who found D'Adamo wide open on the right
side of the field. D'Adamo collected the pass, and quickly drove in
on the Holy Cross goalie. Finally, she beat her with a high shot to
the inside. Statistically American dominated the play, outshooting
the Crusaders 30-6 and taking eight more corners (10-2). The Eagles
entered the game 0-2 against the Crusaders in the series history.
AU will next play at Colgate on Saturday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m.
