Sept. 21, 2003
WASHINGTON - In a game where both teams had
numerous chances to score, neither ultimately could find the back
of the net. In the end it was American University's defense, led by
Amy Muller (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Valley Stream Central), Lauren
Wohl (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air/Bucknell) and Lena Winkler (Denver,
Colo./St. Mary's Academy) that helped the Eagles avoid a loss and
come away with a 0-0 tie. The Eagles are now 2-3-1 on the season.
Defensively, Muller from the sweep position as well Winkler,
Jillian Savani (Woolrich, Pa./Central Mountain) and Amber Sheldon
(Saunderstown, R.I./North Kingstown) all took turns making key
plays to keep the ball out of the AU end of the field. Wohl
finished the afternoon with 10 saves. Offensively the Eagles were
led by Anabel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis), who took seven
shots and had a couple of late opportunities to score. Simone Konig
(Gartringen, Germany/School of Economics in Boblingen) took four
shots on goal while freshman Kristie Fontana (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half
Hollow Hills East) had a season-high five shots. Statistically,
American took seven more shots (26-19), and also had an advantage
in corner kicks (8-6) and fouls (6-18). AU will next play at
Virginia Commonwealth Wednesday, September 24, at 7:00 p.m. Shots:
