WASHINGTON - American University used a
first-half goal by freshman midfielder Christina Gonzalez (Valley
Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) and dodged a late bullet to
pull out a 1-0 victory in the Patriot League Championship
Tournament semifinals an earn a berth in Sunday's championship
game. American dominated the first half of playing, outshooting the
Black Knights 12-0, but couldn't find the net until the 24th
minute, when senior Anabel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis) carried
the ball down the right side of the field and found Gonzalez alone
in the middle of the field. Gonzalez corraled the ball, and beat
Army's goaltender high. Army did not fire its first shot until the
52nd minute, and tallied just three shots total. However, with just
one minute remaining, the Black Knights' Delaney Brown snagged a
through pass on the left side of the field and came in alone on AU
goaltender Lauren Wohl (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air/Bucknell). Wohl came
out and cut down the angle, forcing Brown to fire just wide left.
The Black Knights could not muster another scoring attempt. With
the win, American earns a berth in the Patriot League championship
game on Sunday, Nov. 9, beginning at 1 p.m. The Eagles will play
Navy, which defeated Colgate in the semifinals, 3-2. Scoring: AU -
