AU Women’s Soccer Trumps UMBC, 4-1

WASHINGTON - Junior Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latroba Area/Bucknell) scored her eighth and ninth goals of the 2002 season to lead the American University women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field.

The Eagles, on a two game winning streak, improve to 3-3-1 and will hit the road for the first time in six games Sunday at Old Dominion at 1 p.m.

AU established a quick 1-0 at the 35 minute mark when Erica Peters (Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) tallied her second goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Sarah Boltz (Glen Mills, Pa./Ursuline Academy).

UMBC's Jessa Karko then tallied an unassisted goal five minutes into the second half when she took on AU's keeper Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Good Council) one-on-one.

Within eight minutes, the Eagles rattled off three straight goals including a pair of Rennels scores for the 4-1 final. Freshman Simone Konig (Gartringen, Germany/Economics School Boblingen) assisted on both shots and freshman Marcela Ricupero (Monteserrin,Ecuador/Academia Cotopaxi) and sophomore Maha Elnabawi (Herdon, Va./Oakton) each picked up an assist.

Freshman Natalie Rodovsky (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) scored her first career collegiate goal at the 82 minute for American.
