WASHINGTON - The American women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Virginia Commonwealth University Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field as the Eagles were outshot 18-13.
Junior Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area/Bucknell) scored her sixth goal of the season for AU off a feed from freshman Simone Konig (Gartringen/School of Economics in Boblingen) at 16:24 in the first to knot the score at 1-apiece.
American sophomore midfielder Fedjah Laraque (East Rockaway, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) tallied her first goal of the season less than five minutes into the second half as she chipped in a rebound shot off a corner to take what would be a short-lived lead.
AU (1-3-1) trailed within the first four minutes of the game when Jen Parsons scored her first of two goals in the game and fifth and sixth of the season for the Rams. Freshman Hedda Gardsjord found the back of the net for the first time this season when she broke away from the pack down the right flank and skipped a shot past AU keeper Lauren Wohl (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air/Bucknell). Wohl made 11 saves for the Eagles.
The gamewinning goal came at the 70th minute when Parsons converted a second effort shot into the goal for the final.
Fouls played a role in this match as VCU was called for 22 and American had 11 with three yellow cards.
AU played without sophomore goalkeeper Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) and senior midfielder Megan Monteith (Fredricksburg, Va./Chancellor), both out with injuries suffered in Sunday's 2-2 tie with Towson University.
American will host Stony Brook on Sunday at noon.
