Washington - American University freshman Simone Konig (Gartringen, Germany/School of Economics in Boblingen) scored the game winner off of a free kick to lift the Eagles to a 4-3 win over Howard University. Konig's kick with two seconds left went in untouched.
AU was awarded the free kick after Howard received a yellow card with four seconds remaining. The game winning goal capped a furious AU rally in which Konig helped tie the game at three apiece after she fed Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area/Bucknell) at the 86:21 mark. The assist gave Konig ten for the season, tying the AU single season record set by Liz Pike in 1993.
Senior Megan Monteith (Fredricksburg, Va./Chancellor) set up the Eagles second and third goals of the game. Her first assist was to sophomore Maha Elnabawi (Herndon, Va./Oakton) and tied the game at a goal apiece. Her second assist came just 92 seconds into the second half when Marcela Ricupero (Las Violetas, Monteserrin/Academia Cotopaxi) converted the pass and gave AU a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles 2-1 lead would last for 30 minutes before a late flurry of goals came about. Howard scored two in a row to take a 3-2 lead. Raneika Bean scored two of Howard's three goals and she has 18 on the season.
Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) faced nine shots and picked up five saves in the win. Howard goalie Lindsay Walton registered seven saves for the Bison.
American (6-7-2/2-1-1) will next host Patriot League rival Bucknell on October 26 at 2:00 p.m.
