Washington - Freshman Simone Konig (Gartringen, Germany/School of Economics in Boblingen) assisted on both goals to lead American University to a 2-0 win over Patriot League foe Lehigh, 2-0. The two assists gave Konig nine for the season, erasing the previous AU record of seven set by Liz Pike during the 1990 season.
Konig and Erica Peters (Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) each assisted freshman Natalie Rodovsky (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) on the first score of the game. Konig started things off on a corner kick, Peters then passed it too Rodovsky who slammed pass Lehigh goalie Erin Iwaskiewcz. It was her third goal of the season.
Konig then helped seal the game for AU when she passed it too Marcela Ricupero (Las Viloetas, Monteserrin/Academia Cotopaxi), who scored the final goal of the game at the 58:23 mark.
The Eagles outshot Lehigh by a dozen (16-4) and were led by Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area/Bucknell), who had six shots on goal while Konig, Anabel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis) and Ricupero each had two shots apiece.
After winning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors last week for her performance versus Navy sophomore Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) turned things up a bit today versus Lehigh. She picked up her first shutout of the season, facing four shots and picking up two saves.
Lehigh was led by goalie Erin Iwaskiewicz, who notched six saves and faced 16 shots.
American (5-7-2/2-1-1) will next host crosstown rival Howard on October 23 at 4:00 p.m.
