The American women's soccer team increased their current winning streak to four straight games this evening when they defeated Virginia Commonwealth University, 1-0, in Richmond. Senior Ashley Gormley (Bethesda, Md./ Wheeling Jesuit University) scored the lone goal for the Eagles late in the second half on a free kick 15 yards from the goal.
Freshman keeper Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) again proved invaluable to the Eagles, notching her third straight shutout to anchor the defense. Liese faced 16 total shots by the Rams and ended the night with nine saves (seven in the second half).
Earlier this week, the Patriot League honored the American women's soccer team with two Player of the Week nominations. Senior Diane Wootton (Damascus, Md./Middle Tennessee State) earned Offensive Player of the Week for scoring a goal in each of the Eagles four games (including one game winner) as well as an assist. Keeper Liese earned Rookie of the Week for her current shutout streak.
The Eagles moved to 4-1-0 on the season. They will return home this weekend to play host to Binghamton on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 12:00 p.m. on Reeves Field.
