American Downs Bucknell, 2-0, for Third Straight Win

Washington, DC-- American used first-half goals by Fedjah Laraque (East Rockaway, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Diane Wootton (Damascus, Md./Damascus), and stellar goalkeeping by Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) to beat Bucknell, 2-0, in women's soccer here on Saturday afternoon.

American (3-1-0, 2-0-0 PL) came out quickly, and dominated the early action. Laraque's goal, in the 14th minute, was a drive from 22 yards out that found the lower left corner of the goal. Wootton followed with the Eagles' second score just six minutes later when she took a flip from Sara Jagare (Uppsala, Sweden) and hammered a strike into the upper-right corner of the net.

Bucknell (4-1-0, 0-1-0 PL) had several outstanding scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not convert. The Bisons' first great chance came in the 54th minute when Tara Utchel (Heidelberg, Pa./Sewickley) hit the cross bar from 25 yards out.

Liese also played a large part in keeping Bucknell off the scoreboard, making six saves, including a diving stop on a shot from Savannah Rennells (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area) in the 58th minute.

Bucknell outshot American, 7-4, while the Eagles took four corners to three for the Bison.

American has now held its opponents scoreless for 217 consecutive minutes of action, while Liese has earned back-to-back shutouts over Navy and Bucknell.

American returns to action next Wednesday, September 26, when it travels to VCU for a 7:00 match. The Eagles then return home to host Binghamton in a non-league matchup on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 12:00 p.m. at Reeves Field.
