American Winds Up Regular Season With a 2-1 Victory over Lehigh

WASHINGTON -- American women's soccer finished up the 2001 regular season with a 2-1 win today over visiting Lehigh. Sophomore Ananbel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis) and senior Diane Wootton (Damascus, Md./Middle Tennessee State) each had a goal for the Eagles in the victory.

After a scoreless first half, American got on the board first at 60:57 when Jimenez took a cross from senior Amanda Detterline (Telford, Pa./Souderton) and headed it into the right corner of the goal. The score marked Jimenez's second season goal.

Lehigh responded at 73:08 when Jennifer Karpovich knocked a pass from Lauren Pogrob into the back of the net. The score remained 1-1 as both teams stepped it up in the second half. American had eight shots in the second half compared to nine by Lehigh.

Finally, Wootton scored the decisive goal for the Eagles at 82:09 on an assist from Sara Jagare (Uppsala, Sweden/William Carey). The goal makes Wootton American's leading scorer as she has seven on the season for 18 team points.

Freshman keeper Jen Liese Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) had another strong day, finishing with six total saves against 16 shots made by the visiting Mountain Hawks.

The win brings American to 7-6-3 overall, 4-2-1 in the Patriot League for 2001. Because Bucknell lost to Navy yesterday, the Eagles will enter the Patriot League Championship this weekend as the No. 2 seed. They will play the No. 3 seed, Bucknell, in Annapolis, Md. on the campus of the United States Naval Academy on Friday, Nov. 4.
