WEST POINT, N.Y. - American rallied with three second-half goals to send Army to a 3-1 defeat in a Patriot League women's soccer game at Clinton Field Saturday evening. Freshman Fedjah Laraque's penalty shot provided the Eagles the winning margin, while snapping the Black Knights' five-game win streak.
The Eagles were able to capitalize in a game marred by nine yellow cards (Army 5, American 4). Playing a man-up for 21 minutes in the second half, American not only tied the game 1-1, but the momentum swung to its side of the field after Ashley Gormely capitalized on a scramble in front of the Army net in the 60th minute.
The Black Knights played shorthanded after Randee Farrelll received her second yellow card in the 51st minute. At the time, Army was leading 1-0 after Farrell's free kick opened the scoring with nine minutes left to halftime.
Both sides became even again in the 71st minute when American's Sara Jagare was handed her second yellow card. Two minutes later, Army was called for a tripping violation and American was awarded a penalty shot. Laraque beat Army goalkeeper Sara Johnson with a shot to the right side to snap a 1-1 tie as the Eagles pulled ahead 2-1.
The Black Knights (9-5-1, 1-2) had a chance to tie the game on the same time of play with 9:15 left, but Jen Liese blocked Emily Nay's penalty shot to preserve the win for the Eagles. She made all four of her saves in the second half. Anabel Jimenez added a late insurance goal when she headed Diane Wootton's corner kick into the left side of the Army net.
The Black Knights held a slim 12-11 advantage in shots. Both teams had four shots on goal in the second half. American (6-4, 3-1) capitalized on three of its attempts and Army came up short in suffering its first loss since a 2-0 defeat to Air Force on Sept. 30.
American returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, when it travels to UMBC for a 3:00 p.m. match against the Retreivers. The Eagles then return home on Friday, Oct. 19, for a 3:00 p.m. match against former Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe Old Dominion.
