WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior forward Shanna Ziegenfuss scored the overtime game-winning goal in the 118th minute to lift VCU over American, 1-0 before 239 fans at sun-soaked Reeves Field today.

Ziegenfuss took a cross from Genevieve Trembley in front of the goal, dribble to her left, a stuck an 8-yard blast into the lower right corner in the 118th minute, with just two minutes remaining in the second sudden-death overtime session.

VCU (4-2-0, 1-0-0 CAA), coming off an astounding 17-1 thrashing of Youngstown St., outshot AU, 23-10, and held advantages in corner kicks, 11-2. Trembly nearly won the game in overtime in the 103rd minute but was stopped point blank on a one-one-one by AU's Junior goalkeeper Jackie Sierodzinski, who made several spectacular saves to keep it knotted at zero.

The Rams failed to convert on several outstanding opportunities, including a chance by Ziegenfuss in the 81st minute when she was stopped in a one-on-one chance in front of the net. In addition, Jema Bailey missed a wide-open volley six yards out in front of the goal from a cross in the 41st minute. Senior goalkeeper Lindy Brown made 3 saves for VCU.

American (1--3-1, 0-1-0 CAA), which is currently in the middle of a five-game homestand, got 10 saves from Sierodzinski, including three sparkling ones in the 75th, 81st and 103rd minute. AU's best scoring opportunity happened in the 38th minute when Katie Moore's (Jr., F, Silver Spring, MD/ Good Counsel) shot off the goalie rolled behind en route into the goal before VCU Prue Cromie slid and kicked the ball of the line. The Eagles best second half chance came when Megan Monteith's blast in the 85th minute was saved for a corner kick.

AU will host James Madison on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1:00 PM. VCU travel to Radford on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 2:00 PM.
