WASHINGTON, D.C. - Angela Baroni deflected a cross inside the far post at 61:53 of the second half to lift East Carolina to a 2-1 victory over American at Reeves Field Monday afternoon. With the game tied 1-1, East Carolina forward Leanne McInnis chased a pass down the left sideline and centered the ball to a cutting Baroni, who deflected home the game-winner for the Pirates.
East Carolina, (10-6-2, 3-4 CAA) which has now won two straight conference games, scored first when Kelly Gray collected a rebound in front of the net and beat a sprawling goalkeeper at 14:58. American would tie the score nearly 20 minutes later when the Diane Wootton (Jr., Damascus, MD/Damascus (MTSU) received a long through pass from Kerri Schmidt (Fr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and then scored on a one-on-one finding room below a diving Pirate goalkeeper for Wotton's seventh goal of the season.
American, (2-12-2, 1-6) which was playing without last season's leading scorer Ashley Flanigan (Sr. Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) because of a broken arm suffered against William& Mary, honored its four seniors before the game.
