Reeves Aquatic Center

Reeves Aquatic Center

The Reeves Aquatic Center has been home to the university’s swimming and diving programs since the opening of Bender Arena on Jan. 23, 1988.  It also hosts all recreational aquatic activities for campus, local club and private swim training, as well as instruction and academic classes for the university.

The facility, which includes a 25-yard 8 lane pool as well as a 20-yard 3-lane training pool, is used year around by members of the Jacobs Fitness Center as well as members of Nations Capital Swim Club and Lane 4 Swimming.  The Reeves Aquatic Center has received a number of upgrades since 2010, including a new Daktronics timing display system, a new HVAC system, new lighting, new deck tile, and an additional new 1-meter diving board.

Its center of activity, Frailey Pool, was so dedicated in April of 1987 in honor Robert H. Frailey.  Bob Frailey served as the head swim coach at American University for 16 seasons before taking the position of Director of Athletics, a title which he held for 23 years.  As coach, Frailey guided his Eagles to six conference championships and never once had a losing season. After taking over as head of the Athletics Department, Frailey became one of the founding members of the Colonial Athletic Association and was a member of the NCAA Executive Committee.
