BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Four Eagles knocked 10 or more kills as the American University women's volleyball team defeated Lehigh, 3-1 Saturday afternoon in Grace Hall at Bethlehem, Pa.
The Eagles weathered Lehigh's enthusiastic play in the first game to take a close one 31-29. AU trailed as late as 23-21 before putting in a spurt and notching a two point advantage on a Tara Stradling (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) service ace after a timeout. Neither team hit particularly well with both under .250 for the game.
AU's five match consecutive games winning streak ended in the second game which ended 30-20. Lehigh hit .384 and the Eagles could not put together any runs or side outs.
After the break, AU and Lehigh battled for the first 15 points of the match before American pulled away to win 30-26.
The fourth and decisive game was never in contention as AU controlled from the start and went on to a 30-22 victory.
American had problems on the attack off and on through the afternoon, hitting .236 for the match, just .001 behind Lehigh's .237. In the close confines of Grace Hall where the room behind the back line is significantly shorter, the Eagles had trouble finding their serve touch, dropping 16 points to errors.
Elizabeth Maloney (Toronto, Ontario/Richview C.I.) had 14 kills and three service errors and Chelsa Brooks (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard-Darby) added 10 kills, one solo block and three block assists as both hit over .300. Defensively, Jennifer Cosco (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) had almost half of the team's 45 digs, stopping a four game season-high 21 attacks.
The Eagles have almost a week off before they host Holy Cross in Bender on Friday and face Army in a much-anticipated showdown on the last game of Patriot League play Saturday.
