@AU_Volleyball Hosts PL Tournament This Weekend

AU celebrates a win.

WASHINGTON – American University will play host to the 2018 Patriot League Volleyball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17 and 18 at Bender Arena.

The top-seeded Eagles will face No. 4-seed Colgate in a 2 p.m. semifinal on Saturday. Second-seeded Navy will play third-seed Loyola Maryland in the 5 p.m. semifinal on Saturday.

Semifinal winners meet Sunday at 2 p.m. in the championship match at Bender Arena.


• The Eagles are 19-12 and tied with Navy for first place with a 13-3 record in the Patriot League. AU earned the top seed and home-court advantage for the tournament by virtue of a season sweep over the Midshipmen.

• Senior outside hitter Aleksandra Kazala was voted as the PL Player of the Year for the third straight time. She is only the third player in PL history to earn the league's top honor three times in their career.

• Sophomore opposite Helena Elbaek joined Kazala on the All-PL First Team. She is second on the team in kills and 10th in the league in that statistic.

• Senior setter Kennedy Etheridge was a second team All-PL pick and remains atop the league's chart with her 9.77 assists-per-set average.

• Senior middle Loren McKenzie currently leads the PL in hitting percentage (.395) and blocks per set (1.17).

• American is hosting the PL Tournament for the sixth straight year and for the 16th time in the 18 seasons the Eagles have been a member of the Patriot League.


  • Navy comes into the PL tournament with a 21-8 overall record, and going 13-3 in conference play. 
  • Senior Patricia Mattingly earned Patriot League Setter of the year, earning the honor for the third year in a row. Mattingly was also named to the league's first team, also for the third year in a row. 
  • Sophomore Maddi Sgattoni and Katie Patrick also received All-Patriot League honors, being named to the PL first team and second team respectively. 


  • Loyola has earned its first bid to the Patriot League Tournament since their entrance into the league in 2013. The Greyhounds went 14-15 overall during the season and went 9-7 in Patriot League play. 
  • Freshman Katie Forsythe was awarded two accolades from the Patriot League, being named both Libero and Rookie of the Year. She ended the regular season totaling 681 digs, averaging 5.92 digs per set, putting her third in the NCAA for digs per set. 
  • Junior outside hitter Ann Ernst was named to the All-Patriot League first team, averaging 3.57 kills per game, the most for any Patriot League player. 
  • Head Coach Alija Pittenger was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year after turning around the program from winning two matches last season, to tying for third place in the PL this season. 


  • Colgate ended the regular season with a 14-14 record, ending Patriot League with a 9-7 mark. 
  • Junior outside hitter Alex Stein was named to the Patriot League first team, having 255 kills during the season, 10th-most in the Patriot League on the season. 
  • Sophomore outside hitter Alli Lowe was named to the Patriot League second team, having 300 kills during the season, the sixth-most for all PL players.
